fonuts: Don’t Call it a Doughnut

Gluten-Free Baked/Steamed (Not Fried) “Doughnuts” in Los Angeles

I have a new obsession and its name is fonut. fonuts was opened in 2011 as the brainchild of LA’s most celebrated pastry chef, Waylynn Lucas, and gluten-free baking wiz Nancy Truman, with a goal of elevating the coffee and doughnut experience into tastier and healthier realms. Baked and/or steamed and never fried, fonuts replicate the donut taste you know and love, but give it a modern spin, with many gluten-free and vegan options.


While there are a variety of traditional amazing gluten-filled flavors available, for the purpose of this Allergy Free Wife post I’m going to focus on talking about the gluten-free options. fonuts come in two sizes: regular or mini. Gluten-free flavors include vanilla latte, banana cinnamon, pumpkin, lemon, coconut passion fruit, chocolate coconut, chocolate with sprinkles, vanilla with sprinkles, and banana chocolate. My personal favorite is the lemon, vanilla late, and chocolate with sprinkles.


This mini vanilla fonut with rainbow sprinkles was too cute to eat..almost!


If you can’t pick just one, I understand. A box of six is the way to go! Next time you’re in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend a stop into fonuts. You won’t be disappointed. One small disclaimer is that almond flour is used for the gluten-free donuts, so best to avoid fonuts if you have a nut allergy.
